When Rocky Point's No. 3 hitter and starting second baseman, Sean Craig, broke two bones in his face and was forced to miss the first few weeks of the season after being hit in batting practice, someone needed to step up and help boost offensive production.
That someone is Louis Volpe. He's been hammering opposing pitchers, leading the Eagles in runs batted in since the first game.
Volpe added to his season totals with a 3-for-3 performance, including a monstrous three-run homerun over the left field wall in the bottom of the third inning during a 13-0 win over Westhampton last Wednesday.
Volpe finished with five runs batted in and scored reached the home plate three times himself in the victory. The Eagles swept a Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday series with the struggling Westhampton team (0-6) by a combined score of 33-4.
"We have no returning hitters from last year's varsity, and [Volpe] has been there for us," Rocky Point coach Andrew Aschettino said. "There has been added pressure on him and he has handled it exceptionally."
Senior pitcher Gary Troy pitched a complete game four-hitter, walked one and struck out eight. Westhampton was lead by John Berchin, who had two of the four hits. Rocky Point's Peter Craig was 2-for-2 with a walk, two stolen bases, two runs scored and one run batted in.

Boys Lacrosse: South Side's Season Possibly Over
After a trip to San Diego in which alcohol was allegedly consumed in a hotel room by members of the team, the South Side boys lacrosse team is in jeopardy of having its season cancelled.
They were 17-3 a year ago, losing in the Nassau County title game, and won a state title in 2004.
Newsday reported that Rockville Centre's (South Side is in that district) athletic director Michael Heller said the coaching staff will not be held accountable, and "that they stand behind their coaches."

Girls Lacrosse Notes
Alyssa Murray is only a freshman, so she has plenty of time to match and set career-high totals. However, it might be hard to tie her eight goal performance against West Islip in a 15-14 win. And if her eight goals weren't enough, teammate Shannon Smith, who scored 129 goals last season, scored six and West Islip's Karen Federico scored six, as well.Jenna Davis couldn't have picked a better time to take the game on her back and win it for Division when she fired an unassisted shot with 11 seconds left against Seaford. Division won 6-5 and improved to 4-0 on the season.Alyssa Kaye scored four goals for Jericho in its 10-7 win over Bellmore JFK.
