Which UIL girls basketball districts are most competitive this season?

Here's the best ongoing races with a month left in the regular season.

Girls basketball district races are taking shape with four weeks remaining in the regular season.
A handful of districts in each classification stand out with two or more outstanding teams battling it out for a title.

Here are a few of this season's most challenging districts in the six classifications (Win-loss records through Jan. 9):

CLASS 6A

District 7:
This district produced the state champion last year with Duncanville. Cathy Self-Morgan's Pantherettes are strong again with a 23-2 record. Challenges come Cedar Hill (18-6) and DeSoto (12-5).
Game to watch: Duncanville at DeSoto Feb. 7.

District 27: Wagner (San Antonio) has been best so far at 17-2, but 16-4 Judson (Converse) and 18-6 Steele (Cibolo) are also capable of making long playoff runs.
Game to watch: Judson at Wagner Feb. 3.



District 24: Clear Springs (League City) is 19-3 and commands the district top spot. But not to be overlooked is 15-6 Clear Falls (League City) or Clear Creek (League City), just a game out of first.

District 6: Plano West and Plano East have identical 18-5 records. Guyer (Denton) and Plano are solid contenders.
Game to watch: Plano West at Plano East Jan. 31.

CLASS 5A

District 3:
Three-time defending state champion Canyon is 16-2 and that's not even the best record in the district. Amarillo has that distinction with a 24-1 mark. Not to be overlooked is 20-5 Plainview.
Game to watch: Amarillo at Canyon Jan. 20.

District 10: The Mansfield ISD programs are once again formidable. Mansfield Timberview (Arlington) is 22-2, Mansfield Summit (Arlington) is 18-6 and Mansfield Legacy (Mansfield) is 15-8. Waxahachie and Red Oak, likely top contenders in other districts, are fighting it out for the final playoff berth.
Game to watch: Summit at Timberview Jan. 20.

District 21: It has not taken long for Dayton (20-2) and Barbers Hill (Mt. Belvieu) (20-4) to reach 20 victories. Kingwood Park (Kingwood) remains alive in the title chase with eight games remaining.

CLASS 4A

District 8:
If Godley (22-4) and Stephenville (17-5) were not already enough, first-year district member Midlothian Heritage (Midlothian) has hit the ground running with a 16-7 mark.
Game to watch: Godley at Stephenville Jan. 13.

District 24: Houston ISD powers Wheatley (Houston) (19-3) and Yates (Houston) (19-4) have both outscored opponents by over 500 points.
Game to watch: Wheatley at Yates Jan. 20.

District 28: Boerne is rolling along at 17-2. Fredericksburg is unfazed at 20-5.
Game to watch: Boerne at Fredericksburg Jan. 21.

District 9: Argyle (21-2) is aiming for its third consecutive state crown. Among the serious district challengers is 17-5 Bridgeport.
Game to watch: Argyle at Bridgeport Jan. 24.

CLASS 3A
District 20:
Little River Academy is 18-5 and highly respected in the polls. Add Jarrell (15-7) and Franklin (25-0) to the mix and ultra-competitive match-ups surface.
Game to watch: Little River Academy at Franklin Feb. 3.



District 13: East Texas foes Mt. Vernon (20-5) and 20-4 Chapel Hill (Mount Pleasant) could battle to the wire for this title with Winnsboro (14-10) a potential spoiler.
Game to watch: Chapel Hill at Mt. Vernon Feb. 3.

District 9: Pottsboro is 19-1, Ponder is 19-6 and Whitesboro is having success in district play.
Game to watch: Pottsboro at Ponder Jan. 17.

District 2: Idalou is 18-5 and Shallowater is 17-4. Roosevelt (Lubbock) remains in strong contention.
Game to watch: Roosevelt at Idalou Jan. 31.

CLASS 2A

District 2:
Claude is on a roll at 22-0, but 15-6 Wellington and 15-5 Panhandle are having solid seasons, too.
Game to watch:
Claude at Wellington Jan. 24.

District 22: Woden has just one loss in 23 games. Tenaha (18-3), Chireno (16-7) and Joaquin (18-4) complete a big-four lineup.
Game to watch: Tenaha at Woden Jan. 13.



District 28: Defending state champion Weimar is 18-8. Shiner is 18-5. Ganado gives the district a third solid club.
Game to watch: Shiner at Weimar Jan. 27.

District 11: Muenster (18-4) and Era (18-2) have earned the favorites role. Alvord is also putting together a solid season. Game to watch: Era at Muenster Jan. 31.

Class 1A
District 12:
An interesting race is shaping up between 19-0 Hermleigh and 17-5 Ira.
Game to watch: Hermleigh at Ira Jan. 20.

District 31: Nueces Canyon (Barksdale) is 16-5, a game better than 15-6 Leakey.
Game to watch: Nueces Canyon at Leakey Feb. 7.

District 15: Eula (Clyde) is 16-5 and May (14-6) have the best season records, but Baird could be a factor in the district portion of the schedule.
