Soccer Game Preview: Cannon vs. Providence Day

Cannon hasn't had much luck against Providence Day recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Cougars will head out to take on the Chargers at 6:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Cannon is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Thursday. Everything went their way against Durham Academy as they made off with a 4-1 victory. Mia Valencia was a massive factor in the win as she booted in three goals all by herself.

Meanwhile, Providence Day's contest on Friday was close up to the half, but then they kicked things up a notch. Their defense stepped up to hand Covenant Day a 3-0 shutout. The final result isn't all that surprising considering Providence Day's considerable advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina soccer rankings (they are ranked sixth, while Covenant Day are ranked 64th).

Providence Day has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 13 of their last 15 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-4-1 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they scored 48 goals over those 15 matches. As for Cannon, their victory bumped their record up to 14-6.

Cannon skirted past Providence Day 2-1 when the teams last played back in April. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cougars since the squad won't have the home-pitch advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
