Basketball Recap: Briarwood Academy Picks Up Fourth Consecutive Victory

Briarwood Academy came tearing into Friday's matchup with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 22.7 points) and they left with even more momentum. They enjoyed a cozy 58-43 win over the Glascock County Panthers. Given the Buccaneers' advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 249th, while the Panthers are ranked 535th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Briarwood Academy was led to victory by Mekhi Elam and Sam Mock. Elam dropped a double-double on 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Mock posted 13 points in addition to seven assists and five boards. That's the most assists Mock has posted since back in January. Another player making a difference was Joseph Pickens, who had nine points and eight rebounds.

Briarwood Academy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 17 offensive boards in three consecutive contests.

Briarwood Academy's victory bumped their record up to 5-1. As for Glascock County, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-7.

Briarwood Academy won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Georgia School for Innovation & Classics at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Briarwood Academy knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past six matchups -- so hopefully Georgia School for Innovation & Classics likes a good challenge. As for Glascock County, they will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Georgia Military College at 7:30 p.m. on January 3, 2025.
