Preview: Cambridge Academy Cougars vs. New Covenant School Cavaliers
Cambridge Academy has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will square off against the New Covenant School Cavaliers at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Cambridge Academy posted their biggest victory since December 16, 2023 on Tuesday. They blew past Newberry Academy, posting a 54-21 win at home. Given Cambridge Academy's advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 120th, while Newberry Academy is ranked 259th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Indya Southerland was her usual excellent self, scoring 19 points along with four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points she has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Alex Cockrell, who scored seven points along with five assists and four steals.
Meanwhile, New Covenant School had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 27.4 points), and they went ahead and made it eight on Saturday. They blew past Grace Christian 55-33. New Covenant School pushed the score to 41-20 by the end of the third, a deficit Grace Christian had little chance of recovering from.
Cambridge Academy's win bumped their record up to 11-5. As for New Covenant School, they pushed their record up to 15-1 with that victory, which was their fourth straight on the road.
Cambridge Academy might still be hurting after the 62-37 defeat they got from New Covenant School in their previous meeting back in November of 2023. The match was all but decided by halftime, at which point Cambridge Academy was down 39-17.
