Basketball Game Preview: Winn Mavericks vs. Southside Cardinals

Winn is on a five-game streak of home losses, Southside a three-game streak of away losses, but someone's luck will change on Friday. The Winn Mavericks will host the Southside Cardinals at 12:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Winn had to suffer through a 85-33 loss at the hands of Jay. While losing is never fun, the Mavericks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1224th, while the Mustangs are ranked 238th).

Meanwhile, Southside posted their closest victory since January 26, 2024 on Tuesday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Harlandale 48-45. The score was all tied up 25-25 at the break, but the Cardinals were the better team in the second half.

Winn better keep an eye on Gabryela Galvan. She was instrumental in Southside's win, going 10 of 21 on her way to 23 points. Galvan is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of McKayla Flores, who posted eight points along with five rebounds and five steals.

Winn's loss dropped their record down to 4-20. As for Southside, their victory bumped their record up to 21-5.
