The Colleton County Cougars will head out on the road to face off against the May River Sharks at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Colleton County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.8 runs per game this season.
Colleton County is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering Beaufort just ended the team's five-game winning streak on Wednesday. They took a 6-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Eagles.
Brooklyn Holmes made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games she's played.
Meanwhile, May River came tearing into two weeks ago's game with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 13.3 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Everything went their way against the Eagles as they made off with a 15-1 win. Considering the Sharks have won nine contests by more than seven runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Olivia Nagel spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on six hits.
At the plate, Savannah Johns was incredible, going 4-for-5 with three RBI and one run. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Allie Belcher, who went 2-for-4 with three runs and one RBI.
May River kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in five consecutive matches.
May River's victory was their eighth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 11-6. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.8 runs over those games. As for Colleton County, their defeat dropped their record down to 14-2.
Friday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Colleton County hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .426. However, it's not like May River struggles in that department as they've averaged .415. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Colleton County suffered a grim 11-3 defeat to May River in their previous meeting on April 2nd. Can the Cougars avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
