High school football rankings: Venice earns spot in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 after 54-51 win over Cocoa

Venice (Fla.) was one of two new teams to join the MaxPreps Top 25 high school football rankings after a 54-51 win over Cocoa (Fla.). The Indians – one of the highest scoring teams in the country averaging 57 points per game – improved to 5-0 and check in at No. 19.

Sophomore running back Dorien Irving-Jones had a huge game after Jamarice Wilder went down with an injury in the first quarter, finishing with 31 carries for 217 yards and three touchdowns. Venice plays at Lehigh (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) on Friday before a huge showdown vs. No. 6 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) on Oct. 4.

Massillon (Ohio) was the other new team to join the national rankings and takes the final spot at No. 25. The Tigers beat St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio) for the third consecutive year with a 31-21 win. Senior running back Ja'Meir Gamble led the way on offense with 22 carries for 144 yards and two touchdowns. 

Up next for Massillon is DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) on Friday.

Lakeland (Fla.) and JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) made the biggest jump in this week's rankings.

The Dreadnaughts improved to 4-0 with a 48-13 win over Booker T. Washington (Miami) and moved up four spots to No. 17. They opened the season with a 16-8 win at Central (Miami) and also own another quality win over Lake Mary (Fla.).

JSerra Catholic cruised to a 49-21 win over Damien (La Verne, Calif.) and closed out non-league action 5-0. The Lions moved up five spots to No. 18 and get a week off before opening Trinity League play with Servite (Anaheim, Calif.) on Oct. 4. MaxPreps Top 25 football rankings
