Basketball Recap: Telluride Miners vs. Gunnison Cowboys
Telluride lost against Gunnison back in December of 2022, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. The Telluride Miners were beaten by the Gunnison Cowboys 50-20. While losing is never fun, the Miners can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 301st, while the Cowboys are ranked 120th).
Telluride's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Fianna Ahern, who posted eight points and six boards, and Hazel Noel, who scored no points.
Gunnison had a senior duo take command as Sienna Gomez almost dropped a double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds and Kylee McDougal put up 13 points along with three steals and three blocks. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Gomez has scored all season. Maria Sabas was another key player, putting up four points.
Telluride has traveled a rocky road recently having lost ten of their last 12 matchups, which has put a noticeable dent in their 5-14 record this season. As for Gunnison, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 13-7.
Coming up, Telluride will challenge Ouray at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Telluride is facing Ouray at the right time seeing as Ouray is stuck on an 18-game losing streak. As for Gunnison, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 51-20 victory against Olathe on the 18th.
