Baseball Recap: Polo Victorious

It may have taken nine innings to finish the job, but Polo ultimately got the result they hoped for on Saturday. They won by a run and slipped past the West Carroll Thunder 5-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Marcos have posted since April 29, 2025.

Jackson Willis and Korbin Cavanaugh made a splash no matter where they played. On the mound, Willis tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Cavanaugh pitched seven innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits. What's more, Willis posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March. At bat, Willis went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI, while Cavanaugh went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Willis has been hot recently, having posted two or more stolen bases the last three times he's played.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Henry Donaldson, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one run. Maddox Peterson also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Polo's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-13. As for West Carroll, they have been struggling recently as they've lost ten of their last 12 games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-12 record this season.

Polo will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Ashton-Franklin Center at 4:30 p.m. The Raiders have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 14.24 runs per game on average), something the Marcos will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for West Carroll, they will head out to take on Lena-Winslow at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Thunder's pitchers better be ready for this one: the Panthers have averaged an impressive 8.5 runs per game this season.
