Volleyball Recap: Washburn Comes Up Short

After flying high against Union County on Tuesday, Washburn came back down to earth. The Pirates took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Cherokee Chiefs on Thursday. If the Pirates were looking for revenge after losing 3-0 to the Chiefs when the teams met back in September of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

The final score came out to 25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 25-11.

Abigail Epperson paced Washburn's offense, picking up 13 kills. Epperson got some help from Kylie Ferguson and her 19 assists. Ferguson was also solid from the service line: she led the team with three aces.

Washburn now has a losing record of 1-2. As for Cherokee, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 3-0.

Looking ahead, Washburn will be taking part in a tournament against Knoxville T at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday. Cherokee will be paying especially close attention to the Pirates' game: after the Pirates face off against the Trailblazers, they'll take on Cherokee again at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday.
