Softball Game Preview: Downingtown West Whippets vs. Avon Grove Red Devils

Downingtown West is a perfect 10-0 against Avon Grove since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Whippets will host the Red Devils at 3:45 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Avon Grove will square off against a team with plenty of momentum: Downingtown West extended their winning streak to three on Tuesday. The Whippets blew past Bishop Shanahan 15-5. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Whippets considering their two-run performance the game before.

Kiri Weidner was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

In other batting news, Downingtown West let Casey McWilliams and Ava Kaczmarski run wild. McWilliams scored four runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances, while Kaczmarski fired off two home runs and four RBI while going 3-for-4. Those four RBI gave Kaczmarski a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Sami Harple, who scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-5.

Downingtown West always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .632. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Avon Grove, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Wednesday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand Bayard Rustin a 10-0 shutout on Thursday. The Red Devils haven't had any issues with the Golden Knights recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.

Avon Grove pushed their record up to 8-1 with the victory, which was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.7 runs over those games. As for Downingtown West, their victory bumped their record up to 5-2.

Downingtown West skirted past Avon Grove 6-5 when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Do the Whippets have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Red Devils turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
