Recap: Sandhills Valley Mavericks vs. Sandhills/Thedford Knights
The Sandhills Valley Mavericks's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their third straight loss. They fell just short of Sandhills/Thedford by a score of 64-62. While losing is never fun, Sandhills Valley can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 209th, while Sandhills/Thedford is ranked 104th).
Sandhills Valley's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Leyton Connell, who scored 17 points along with five assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Isaac Goosey, who scored 13 points along with two steals.
Even though they lost, Sandhills Valley were working as a unit and finished the game with 19 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Sandhills Valley now has a losing record at 5-6. As for Sandhills/Thedford, their win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-4.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sandhills Valley will face off against Maxwell at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Maxwell is coming into the matchup on a four-game losing streak. Sandhills/Thedford will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Burwell on February 1st.
