Softball Recap: Rio Vista Takes Down Axtell in a Playoff Battle

With a playoff win on the line, Rio Vista rose to the challenge on Saturday. They had just enough and edged out the Axtell Longhorns 7-5. This was a revenge game for the Eagles: when they faced off against the Longhorns on Friday, they had to take a 23-1 defeat.

Kailee Dyer spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and four unearned) runs on seven hits.

At the plate, Keller Rodriguez was excellent, going 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double. Those three hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Cloe Zepeda, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two RBI.

Rio Vista is on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 12 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-3 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.7 runs over those games. As for Axtell, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 17-9-1 record this season.

Rio Vista will square off against Moody at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Eagles will need to watch out since the Bearcats have now posted at least ten runs in their last three matches. Axtell does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
