Basketball Recap: Wekiva Comes Up Short

If Wekiva was riding high fresh off their 63-32 takedown of Dr. Phillips on Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Mustangs were outmatched by the Ocoee Knights and fell 55-26. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 68th, while the Knights are ranked ninth).

Despite the defeat, Wekiva saw an underclassman step up: freshman Alexis Hill almost dropped a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds. Hill has also also been stellar as far as shooting accuracy is concerned: she's posted one of at least 50% every time she's hit the court this season.

Ocoee was led to victory by Dakara Merthie and Jazmine Monroe. Merthie posted 18 points and seven steals, while Monroe shot 50% from the field en route to 14 points. That's the most steals Merthie has posted since back in January. Another player making a difference was Aniya Hester, who had four points.

Wekiva's loss dropped their record down to 4-2. As for Ocoee, their victory was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 8-1.

Wekiva has already played their next game, a 51-45 defeat against Altamonte Christian on the 9th. As for Ocoee, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 73-20 win against Central Florida Christian Academy on the 9th.
