Baseball Game Preview: Martinsville Pirates vs. Broaddus Bulldogs

For the second straight game, Martinsville will face off against Broaddus. The Pirates will welcome the Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Martinsville is looking for their season's first win.

Broaddus hit Martinsville with a four-run first inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Pirates lost 12-2 to the Bulldogs.

For Broaddus' part, Aiden Sowell made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out 11 batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. Sowell is becoming a predictor of Broaddus' success: when he allows at most two earned runs the team is 3-1 (and 3-7-1 when he doesn't). Sowell was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. That home run was his first of the season.

In other batting news, Broaddus let Caysin Hamilton and Trenton Sowell run wild. Hamilton went 2-for-3 with four stolen bases, three runs, and one triple, while Sowell went 2-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and two runs. Hamilton has become a key player for Broaddus: the team is 4-2 when he posts at least two runs, but 2-6-1 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Greyson Warden, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

Broaddus lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've posted since back in March of 2024.

Broaddus' victory bumped their record up to 6-8-1. As for Martinsville, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-6.
