Baseball Game Preview: Covington Trojans vs. Terre Haute South Vigo Braves

The Covington Trojans will head out on the road to square off against the Terre Haute South Vigo Braves at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Covington is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.3 runs per game this season.

Covington took a seven-run loss the last time they faced off against Riverton Parke, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Trojans won by a run and slipped past the Panthers 9-8. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Trojans as it put an end to their four-game losing streak.

Kyven Hill made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He is becoming a predictor of Covington's success: when he allows at most two hits the team is undefeated (and 5-8 when he doesn't). Hill was even better at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.

In other batting news, Cian Moore was incredible, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. He has become a key player for Covington: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 7-8 otherwise.

Covington kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

Meanwhile, Terre Haute South Vigo had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5 runs) and they went ahead and made it five on Saturday. They put the hurt on the Lions with a sharp 12-3 victory. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Braves considering their two-run performance the contest before.

The win got Terre Haute South Vigo back to even at 10-10. As for Covington, their record is now 10-8.

Covington skirted past Terre Haute South Vigo 9-8 when the teams last played back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Trojans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
