Baseball Recap: Springfield Southeast Takes a Loss

Springfield Southeast made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Taylorville, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Spartans fell just short of the Tornadoes by a score of 8-6 on Monday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Spartans have suffered against the Tornadoes since April 10, 2015.

T Herrington was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out six over 4.2 innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Springfield Southeast: the team is 5-2 when he posts at least two runs, but 2-13 otherwise.

In other batting news, E Murphy was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with one double and one RBI. A Dunphy also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

Springfield Southeast's defeat dropped their record down to 7-15. As for Taylorville, they pushed their record up to 11-6 with the win, which was their third straight on the road.

Looking ahead, Springfield Southeast will challenge Glenwood at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Spartans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Titans have averaged an impressive 8.3 runs per game this season. As for Taylorville, they will take on Williamsville at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
