Basketball Recap: Louie Gutierrez's Big Game Can't Quite Lead IDEA Weslaco Pike over Progreso

IDEA Weslaco Pike was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They took a 54-47 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Progreso Red Ants. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Mavericks this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 51-32 back in December of 2024.

Several Mavericks players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Louie Gutierrez, who posted eight points along with five assists and four steals. Gutierrez has been hot, having posted two or more steals the last six times he's played. Aaron Leos was another key player, going 5 for 10 en route to 10 points and seven rebounds.

Even though they lost, IDEA Weslaco Pike smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Progreso only pulled down eight offensive boards.

Progreso had a senior duo take command as Julio Resendez dropped a double-double on 14 points and 20 boards and Mathew Zuniga went 6 of 9 on his way to 15 points in addition to six rebounds and five assists. Another player making a difference was Hugo Gamboa, who had eight points.

IDEA Weslaco Pike's loss dropped their record down to 5-16. As for Progreso, their win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 14-18.

IDEA Weslaco Pike will face off against Lyford at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Lyford will roll in looking for their 14th straight victory, something IDEA Weslaco Pike surely won't give up without a fight. Progreso has already played their next matchup (against IDEA Frontier College Prep), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
