Baseball Game Preview: Century Panthers vs. Mayo Spartans

The Century Panthers will head out to face off against the Mayo Spartans at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Mayo took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Century, who comes in off a win.

On Wednesday, Century earned an 8-4 victory over John Marshall.

Century saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Owen Kelly, who went 3-for-5 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Kelly is becoming a predictor of the Panthers' success: when he posts at least three hits the team is undefeated (and 5-6 when he doesn't). Mike Ruff also deserves some recognition as he scored his first runs of the season.

Mankato East hit Mayo with a four-run third inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Spartans lost 11-4 to the Cougars. The loss continues a trend for the Spartans in their meetings with the Cougars: they've now lost three in a row.

Mayo's defeat dropped their record down to 8-5. As for Century, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 8-6 record this season.

Century was able to grind out a solid win over Mayo when the teams last played back in May of 2024, winning 8-4. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Panthers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
