Baseball Game Preview: Athens Red Hawks vs. University Liggett Knights

The Athens Red Hawks will head out on the road to square off against the University Liggett Knights at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Athens' pitching crew heads into the contest hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Tuesday. They walked away with a 4-0 win over Stoney Creek. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Red Hawks.

The result came thanks to Derek Smith's shutout, as he gave up just two hits and racked up eight Ks. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Oliver Holmes was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. Athens is undefeated when Holmes posts two or more runs, but 3-11 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Andrew Cermak, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI and one double.

Athens hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Stoney Creek struck out eight times.

West Bloomfield typically has all the answers at home, but on Saturday University Liggett proved too difficult a challenge. They came out on top against the Lakers by a score of 7-4.

Athens' record is now 6-11. As for University Liggett, their record now sits at 16-11-2.

Athens couldn't quite get it done against University Liggett in their previous meeting back in April of 2016 as they fell 5-0. Can the Red Hawks avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
