Softball Recap: Clay County Comes Up Short

Clay County had lost five straight on the road, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 2-6 to make it six. They came up short against the Gilmer County Titans, falling 19-2. The contest marked the Panthers' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

As for Gilmer County, the win was the eighth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 16-5. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 15 games by seven runs or more this season.

For Gilmer County's part, Kenley Hartshorn was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed three innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. Hartshorn has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run and four RBI. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Gilmer County got a massive performance out of Layla Smith, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Paige Montgomery, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base.

Coming up, Gilmer County will be playing at home against Midland Trail at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Clay County will be paying especially close attention to the Titans' matchup: after the Titans face off against Tyler, they'll take on Clay County again at 7:00 p.m. on May 2.
