Softball Recap: Winthrop Vikings vs. Salem Witches
Winthrop was the 7-4 winner over Salem when they last played one another back in April, but their luck changed this time around. The Vikings took a 7-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Witches on Thursday. The Vikings have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Lucy Boncore spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered six earned (and one unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up 13 Ks.
On the hitting side, Winthrop saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Sofia Gonzalez, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one run. Tina Fabiano also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Winthrop's defeat dropped their record down to 4-12. As for Salem, they moved to 4-8 with that win, which also ended their five-game losing streak.
Coincidentally, Winthrop and Salem will both be playing Gloucester the next time they take the field. The Vikings will head out to face the Fishermen at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, while the Witches will host them at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
