Softball Game Preview: Fitch Falcons vs. Stonington Bears

The Fitch Falcons will face off against the Stonington Bears at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Stonington will square off against a team with plenty of momentum: Fitch extended their winning streak to four on Tuesday. The Falcons never let Killingly get on the board and left with a 21-0 win. The Falcons' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Hailey Merrill made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out six over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI. That run was her first of the season.

In other batting news, Fitch got a massive performance out of Grace Cosmopoulos, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one double. Another player making a difference was Katie MacPherson, who went 4-for-5 with three runs, one double, and one RBI.

Fitch kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 19 hits. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

Meanwhile, Stonington earned an 11-6 victory over Wheeler on Tuesday. The Bears haven't had any issues with the Lions recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.

Fitch's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-3. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.7 runs over those games. As for Stonington, their victory bumped their record up to 3-1.

Fitch couldn't quite finish off Stonington in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 and fell 6-4. Can the Falcons avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
