Basketball Game Preview: Watkins Memorial Warriors vs. Newark Catholic Green Wave

Watkins Memorial is 2-8 against Newark Catholic since January of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Watkins Memorial Warriors will face off against the Newark Catholic Green Wave at 6:45 p.m. Watkins Memorial will be strutting in after a victory while Newark Catholic will be coming in after a defeat.

Last Saturday, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Watkins Memorial beat Zanesville 43-39.

Watkins Memorial's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Ella Perry, who went 5 for 11 en route to 14 points along with seven boards and three steals. Perry is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for three straight games. Another player making a difference was Abby Mumford, who posted eight points.

Meanwhile, after a string of six wins, Newark Catholic's good fortune finally ran out on Monday. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 40-39 to Johnstown-Monroe. While losing is never fun, the Green Wave can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 207th, while the Johnnies are ranked 101st).

Newark Catholic's loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 11-6. As for Watkins Memorial, their win bumped their record up to 6-11.

Watkins Memorial came up short against Newark Catholic in their previous meeting back in December of 2023, falling 33-25. Can Watkins Memorial avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
