Basketball Recap: Matoaca Falls Despite Big Games from Sydney Richardson and Kailah Carter

After flying high against Petersburg last Tuesday, Matoaca came back down to earth. The Matoaca Warriors lost to the Hopewell Blue Devils on the road by a 74-55 margin on Thursday. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Warriors this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 62-51 back in December of 2024.

Matoaca's loss came despite strong showings from Kailah Carter and Sydney Richardson. Carter went 11 for 18 to rack up 27 points, while Richardson went 5 of 9 en route to 17 points in addition to six rebounds and three steals. The matchup was Richardson's tenth in a row with at least 15 points. Another player making a difference was Kendra Carter, who posted five points and five boards.

Erin Edmonds HV17 was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 46 points and 11 rebounds for Hopewell. That makes it eight consecutive games in which Edmonds HV17 has scored at least a third of Hopewell's points. The team also got some help courtesy of April Winfield, who went 7 of 17 on her way to 16 points.

Matoaca's defeat dropped their record down to 10-8. As for Hopewell, their victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-4.

Matoaca didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 64-44 loss against Glen Allen on the 8th. As for Hopewell, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Petersburg at 7:15 p.m. Hopewell is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 62.2 points per game this season.
