Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Melrose-Mindoro). They were the clear victors by a 20-2 margin over Pepin/Alma on Tuesday. Considering the Mustangs have won six contests by more than seven runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Jacob Thesing made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out six batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Eric Herzberg was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, five runs, and five RBI. Those five RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Brett Peterson, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with three RBI and one run.
Melrose-Mindoro always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .619. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
The victory (which was Melrose-Mindoro's fourth in a row) raised their record to 10-3. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for Pepin/Alma, their loss dropped their record down to 2-6.
Coincidentally, Melrose-Mindoro and Pepin/Alma will both be playing Augusta the next time they take the field. The Mustangs will host the Beavers at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, while Pepin/Alma will head out to face them at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
