Softball Recap: Wickliffe Continues Road Dominance on Tuesday

Wickliffe had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 14-run drubbing they dealt Kirtland on Tuesday. The Blue Devils never let the Hornets get on the board and left with a 14-0 win. The Blue Devils haven't had any issues with the Hornets recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.

Leigha Blazetic made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 12 over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Mackayla Gazdak was incredible, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. Maddie Kita was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.

Wickliffe's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-6. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.7 runs on average over those games. As for Kirtland, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 6-10.

Wickliffe and Kirtland could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Ohio Rankings. The Blue Devils will challenge Perry at 5:00 p.m. on Friday with a big rank disadvantage (256 vs. 71). Meanwhile, Kirtland (ranked 511th) will meet Kenston (ranked 234th) at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
