Baseball Recap: Deer Valley Comes Up Short

Deer Valley had lost four straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 0-12 to make it five. They lost 12-0 to the Antioch Panthers. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Panthers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 8-1 on Tuesday.

As for Antioch, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 8-12. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games.

For Antioch's part, Zack Gregson made a splash no matter where he played. He tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Gregson was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Those three hits gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Stanton Westhorpe and Kamari Davis did most of the damage at the plate: Westhorpe went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double, while Davis went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. Davis has become a key player for Antioch: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 6-11 otherwise. David Pena also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

Deer Valley and Antioch could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. The Wolverines (ranked 1037th) will meet Pittsburg (ranked 116th) at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Antioch will challenge Heritage at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank disadvantage (662 vs. 117).
