Softball Recap: Arroyo Takes a Loss

Arroyo fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Heritage on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Heritage Patriots by a score of 7-6. The Dons have struggled against the Patriots recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost meetings.

Sadie Fernandez was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up five earned runs off 11 hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. That stolen base marked the first that she snagged this season.

In other batting news, Aneesa Aguon made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-5. Those three hits gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Hailey Howard, who went 2-for-5 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.

Even though they lost, Arroyo kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive games.

Arroyo's record is now 1-3. As for Heritage, their victory (their first of the season) made their record 1-3.

Looking ahead, Arroyo will look to take advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they take on Berkeley at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Berkeley has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.25 runs per game on average), something Arroyo will no doubt try to take advantage of. Heritage will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Woodcreek at 2:00 p.m. on March 28th.
