Basketball Game Preview: Douglas County Huskies vs. Chaparral Wolverines

The Douglas County Huskies will challenge the Chaparral Wolverines at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Douglas County is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They came out on top against Highlands Ranch by a score of 70-58 on Friday. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Huskies as it put an end to their five-game losing streak.

Douglas County's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Vaughn Baldwin led the charge by going 6 for 8 en route to 16 points in addition to six assists and six rebounds. Those six assists gave Baldwin a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Xavier Wynne, who went 5 of 8 on his way to 13 points and seven boards.

Baldwin wasn't the only one working in the assists department: Douglas County was working as a unit and finished the game with 18 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, Chaparral waltzed into their game on Friday with four straight wins... but they left with five. They managed a 70-65 victory over the Jaguars. Given the Wolverines' advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked fourth, while the Jaguars are ranked 41st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Chaparral's win came from a few key players Douglas County will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Luke Howery, who posted 13 points along with eight assists and six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Christian Williams, who went 6 for 14 en route to 17 points and seven boards.

Chaparral's win bumped their record up to 12-3. As for Douglas County, their victory was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 4-10.

Douglas County couldn't quite finish off Chaparral in their previous matchup back in January of 2024 and fell 65-63. Can Douglas County avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
