After both having extra time off, the Genoa-Hugo/Karval Pirates and the Calhan Bulldogs will dust off their jerseys to take on one another at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Genoa-Hugo/Karval is coming into the match on a three-game losing streak.
Back in December of 2024, Genoa-Hugo/Karval was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 34-28 to Hi-Plains.

Despite the loss, Genoa-Hugo/Karval had strong showings from Rylee Corn, who posted 11 points in addition to eight rebounds and three steals, and Amy James, who put up five points and five steals. Those three steals gave Corn a new career-high.
Even though they lost, Genoa-Hugo/Karval smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Calhan). They came out on top against Sierra Grande by a score of 52-39 back in December of 2024.
Calhan's win came from a few key players Genoa-Hugo/Karval will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Savannah Stewart, who posted ten points along with eight rebounds and three steals. Stewart is crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Kailey Peterson, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 16 boards.
Genoa-Hugo/Karval's defeat dropped their record down to 1-5. As for Calhan, the win got them back to even at 2-2.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Genoa-Hugo/Karval has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 23.8 boards per game. However, it's not like Calhan struggles in that department as they've been averaging 39.8 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Everything came up roses for Genoa-Hugo/Karval against Calhan when the teams last played back in January of 2024, as the squad secured a 45-17 victory. Does Genoa-Hugo/Karval have another victory up their sleeve, or will Calhan turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
