Basketball Recap: Sam Sermo's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Berkley over Stoney Creek

While it was all tied up 28-28 at halftime, Berkley was not quite Stoney Creek's equal in the second half on Friday. 2025 welcomed they with a 63-43 loss courtesy of the Stoney Creek Cougars. While losing is never fun, the Bears can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Michigan basketball rankings (they are ranked 489th, while the Cougars are ranked 190th).

Berkley's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sam Sermo, who posted 11 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Sam Niyo, who put up two points and five rebounds.

Even though they lost, Berkley was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their assist total in three consecutive games.

Berkley has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-5 record this season. As for Stoney Creek, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-3.

Berkley will challenge University at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Stoney Creek, they will take on Pontiac at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
