Softball Recap: St. Anthony Comes Up Short

St. Anthony extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 16 on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 0-12 in the process. They came up short against the St. Paul Swordsmen, falling 14-3. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Swordsmen this season, with their most recent loss being a 18-1 defeat on April 1st.

Nata Leomiti was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run and three RBI. Those RBI were her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Ivy Burnham, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base.

As for St. Paul, the win got them back to even at 12-12. The victory made it back-to-back wins for they.

On St. Paul's side, they got a great performance from Gianelle Napoles as she struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up three earned runs off six hits.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Aleena Gutierrez, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and two runs. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Kailee Mejia, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double.

St. Anthony and St. Paul could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. The Saints (ranked 769th) will meet Bishop Amat (ranked 138th) at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, St. Paul will challenge Paraclete at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday with a big rank disadvantage (265 vs. 54).
