Basketball Game Preview: Rustburg Red Devils vs. Amherst County Lancers

Rustburg hasn't had much luck against Amherst County recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. Having just played yesterday, the Rustburg Red Devils will head out on the road to face off against the Amherst County Lancers at 7:00 p.m. Rustburg will be strutting in after a win while Amherst County will be coming in after a defeat.

Rustburg took a loss when they played away from home on Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Monday. They breezed past Randolph-Henry to the tune of 39-6. The Red Devils haven't had any issues with the Statesmen recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive victory against them.

Samiyah Jackson had a dynamite game for Rustburg, putting up 14 points along with seven boards and three steals. Another player making a difference was Haven Grinstead, who posted 11 points and five steals.

Meanwhile, Amherst County was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their sixth straight loss. They lost 63-38 to Liberty. While losing is never fun, the Lancers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 263rd, while the Minutemen are ranked 53rd).

Rustburg will need to focus on slowing down Addie Kurko, one of several Amherst County players who made an impact when they last played. She earned ten points and six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Emmena Awanda, who scored seven points and seven boards.

Even though they lost, Amherst County smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in four consecutive matches.

Rustburg's win bumped their record up to 9-10. As for Amherst County, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-13.

Rustburg came up short against Amherst County in their previous matchup back in January, falling 43-32. Can Rustburg avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
