Baseball Recap: Niles West Victorious

Highland Park typically has all the answers at home, but on Thursday Niles West proved too difficult a challenge. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Giants 6-5. The game was the first time the Wolves have beaten the Giants on their field since May 1, 2021.

Shaylen Patel looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off two hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted over his last four games.

At the plate, Christian Guzman was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Niles West is 6-3 when Guzman posts two or more runs, but 10-12 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Lucas Som, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Niles West now has a winning record of 16-15. As for Highland Park, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 22-7-1 record this season.

Niles West will have a chance to go back-to-back against Highland Park: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:45 p.m. on Friday.
