Baseball Game Preview: Rocky Mount Gryphons vs. Southern Nash Firebirds

Rocky Mount is 2-8 against Southern Nash since April of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Gryphons will look to defend their home field against the Firebirds at 6:00 p.m.

Rocky Mount is headed into Tuesday's game looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their fifth straight game on Friday. They lost 7-1 to Franklinton.

Rocky Mount saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Christian Buck, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-3.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Southern Nash). They blew past Raleigh HomeSchool 18-8 on Friday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Firebirds considering their one-run performance the contest before.

Caiden Peeler made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing 3.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Southern Nash is 3-1 when Peeler allows one or fewer earned runs, but 4-8 otherwise. Peeler was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-2. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in RBI (two).

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Maddox Deans, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with six RBI, two triples, and three runs. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March of 2024. Landon Brown was another key player, scoring two runs while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.

Southern Nash was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .484. They are 2-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Rocky Mount's defeat dropped their record down to 4-8. As for Southern Nash, they moved to 7-9 with that victory, which also ended their three-game losing streak.

Rocky Mount might still be hurting after the 11-0 loss they got from Southern Nash in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. Can the Gryphons avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
