Softball Recap: Make It Three in a Row for Newton South

Newton South had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 24.5 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Tuesday. They blew past the East Boston Jets 27-7. Considering the Lions have won eight games by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Sophie Nathanson made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and six unearned) runs off seven hits. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 5.2 strikeouts per game. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run.

In other batting news, Lauren Kelley was incredible, getting on base in all six of her plate appearances with six runs, three stolen bases, and two RBI. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last six games she's played. Another player making a difference was Zoe Spector, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with three stolen bases, five runs, and one RBI.

Newton South pushed their record up to 9-4 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 17.0 runs over those games. As for East Boston, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-9 record this season.

Newton South will challenge Wayland at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Warriors have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.86 runs per game on average), something the Lions will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for East Boston, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Revere at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday.
