Softball Game Preview: Dowagiac Chieftains vs. South Haven Rams

After both having extra time off, the Dowagiac Chieftains and the South Haven Rams will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.

Dowagiac barely beat St. Joseph the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Chieftains put the hurt on the Bears with a sharp 7-1 win last Wednesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Chieftains.

Rebecca Guernsey was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run over 4.1 innings pitched. Guernsey was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Olivia McIntosh, who scored a run while going 3-for-4. That's the most hits she has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Claire Hess, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

Meanwhile, South Haven never let their opponents score last Wednesday. Everything went their way against Berrien Springs as they made off with a 15-0 victory. The win continues a trend for the Rams in their matchups with the Shamrocks: they've now won seven in a row.

South Haven has also opened the season with a perfect 2-0 record. As for Dowagiac, their victory bumped their record up to an identical 2-0.

Dowagiac suffered a grim 15-0 defeat to South Haven when the teams last played back in April of 2018. Can the Chieftains avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
