The Tocoi Creek Toros will head out on the road to challenge the St. Augustine Yellow Jackets at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Tocoi Creek is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.
If Tocoi Creek beats St. Augustine with eight runs on Friday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two contests with that exact score. Tocoi Creek beat Nease on Thursday by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 8-1. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Toros.
Nate Wade made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits (and not a single walk). He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up a single earned run in five consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-4.
In other pitching news, Brayden Harris looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, Tocoi Creek let Mikey Bergamo and Chase Pate run wild. Bergamo scored two runs and stole Three bases. while going 2-for-4, while Pate scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3. That's the most hits Pate has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Jackson Sizemore, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but St. Augustine ultimately got the result they hoped for on Thursday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Englewood 4-3.
Xavier Ahr made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out six batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. Ahr was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one home run. That home run was his first of the season.
In other batting news, Maddux Dowler was incredible, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run and two RBI.
St. Augustine lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
Tocoi Creek pushed their record up to 9-1 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for St. Augustine, they now have a winning record of 6-5.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Tocoi Creek has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 11.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like St. Augustine struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went Tocoi Creek's way against St. Augustine when the teams last played back in March of 2024, as Tocoi Creek made off with an 11-4 win. Does Tocoi Creek have another victory up their sleeve, or will St. Augustine turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
