Football Recap: Overton Comes Up Short

After flying high against Maud last Thursday, Overton came back down to earth. The Mustangs fell 37-27 to the Grapeland Sandies on Friday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Mustangs of the 31-23 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in November of 2024.

When it comes to explaining why Overton lost, don't look at Rylan Holleman. Despite the final result, he rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns, and also threw for 114 yards and one TD. Holleman didn't just play on offense: he also made nine total tackles and defended four passes. Jacob Osburn also helped out with an impressive 86 receiving yards.

Overton's defeat dropped their record down to 3-2. As for Grapeland, they now also have a winning record of 3-2.

Looking ahead, Overton will face off against Tenaha at 7:00 p.m. on October 4. The Mustangs will be up against the Tigers' rather soft defense (which has allowed 43.2 points per matchup), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Grapeland, they will square off against Alto at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Yellowjackets will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something the Sandies surely won't give up without a fight.
