Baseball Recap: Green Valley Comes Up Short

Green Valley extended their losing streak to four on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 15-14 in the process. They came up short against the Basic Wolves, falling 14-3. If the Gators were looking for revenge after losing 11-6 to the Wolves when the teams met back in May of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Caden Kirby was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run. He is becoming a predictor of Green Valley's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 4-1 (and 11-13 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Jet McNelis, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

As for Basic, they pushed their record up to 17-6 with the victory, which was their seventh straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.1 runs on average over those games.

On Basic's side, Johnny Villarreal looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Villarreal has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Tate Southisene, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. What's more, he posted two doubles, the most he's had since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Dallon Cegavske, who went 1-for-2 with one home run and three RBI.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Basic beat Green Valley by a score of 5-0 on Wednesday.
