Basketball Recap: Pine Grove Comes Up Short

Pine Grove lost against Falkner last Thursday and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Pine Grove Panthers took a hard 51-36 fall against the Falkner Eagles. The match marked the Panthers' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Falkner's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Elijah Mauney led the charge by going 9 for 17 on his way to 22 points along with five boards and four steals. With that strong performance, Mauney is now averaging an impressive 2.1 steals per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Chris Nunley, who posted 12 points in addition to seven rebounds and three steals.

Pine Grove's loss was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 6-1 and their overall record down to 12-8. As for Falkner, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 8-7.

A feisty cat fight is on tap when the Pine Grove Panthers face off against the Houlka Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Houlka knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past six games -- so hopefully Pine Grove likes a good challenge. Falkner has already played their next match (against Myrtle), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
