Recap: Alexander Central Cougars vs. Butler Bulldogs
Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but unfortunately for The Alexander Central Cougars, they weren't the ones who walked away with it. They were outmatched by Butler on the road and fell 49-7. The low total for Alexander Central limited their streak of high-flying scores to five in a row.
Tanner Moore threw for 87 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Sawyer Chapman-Mays rushed for 34 yards.
Butler's win on Friday was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Zachary Lawrence, who threw for 163 yards and three touchdowns. Jayden Williams was in the mix as well, providing Butler with two touchdowns.
The team's defense also helped out by holding Alexander Central to a paltry 142 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to Butler's ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid him out four times before it was all said and done. Leading the way was Mark Williams and his two sacks.
Alexander Central's defeat was their fourth straight on the road , which bumped their record down to 5-6. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 11-0 Watauga and 8-3 Sun Valley (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 79.5% over those games). As for Butler, the victory (which was their tenth in a row) raised their record to 10-1.
Alexander Central does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Butler will be playing at home against West Forsyth at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. West Forsyth has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 171 points over their last four matchups.
