Basketball Recap: Mater Dei Monarchs vs. Crespi Celts
Mater Dei had to start their season on the road on Saturday, and it wasn't the start they were hoping for. They were beaten by the Crespi Celts 90-59. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Monarchs have suffered since December 19, 2024.
Mater Dei's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Richie Ramirez, who posted 26 points and six rebounds. Malloy Smith was another key player, putting up 12 points.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Crespi to victory, but perhaps none more so than Cayman Martin, who went 9-for-17 en route to 21 points in addition to seven boards and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Isaiah Barnes, who shot 73% from the field to rack up 23 points.
Crespi has started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it.
Mater Dei wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 73-71 defeat against Morton on the 26th. As for Crespi, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, an 84-68 win against Golden Valley on the 25th.
