Softball Game Preview: Apex Cougars vs. Middle Creek Mustangs

Apex and Middle Creek are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2019, but likely not for long. Apex will square off against Middle Creek at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Apex has given up an average of 9.8 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Apex came up short against Roxboro Community on Monday, falling 16-9. The Cougars have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Leah Kendall was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring four runs and stealing six bases while going 2-for-3. She has been hot, having posted at least one stolen base the last five times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Maggie Austin, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Middle Creek, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Tuesday. They blew past Cary 15-0 on Monday. Considering the Mustangs' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.

The team relied heavily on Tori Gore, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. That home run marked the first that she launched this season. Madelyn Herndon was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.

Middle Creek always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .607. The last time their OBP was this high was back in April of 2024.

Apex's defeat dropped their record down to 4-4. As for Middle Creek, their record is now 2-6.

Middle Creek's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Apex has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .438.
