Softball Recap: Union Academy Takes Down East Wilkes in a Playoff Battle

It's playoff time, and Union Academy had no trouble coming through when it counted. Their pitcher stepped up to hand East Wilkes a 4-0 shutout on Thursday. Give Union Academy's pitching crew some credit: that's the team's sixth straight shutout.

Avery Wilson was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 11 over seven innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run and three RBI.

Wilson wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Avery Chaney, who went 2-for-3 with one run.

Union Academy pushed their record up to 27-1 with the victory, which was their eighth straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.6 runs on average over those games. As for East Wilkes, their loss ended a 13-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 25-6.

As of now, neither Union Academy nor East Wilkes have any future games scheduled.
