Softball Recap: Sumner Comes Up Short

Sumner had lost four straight on the road, but on Friday they dropped down to 8-9 to make it five. They took a 5-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Wesley Chapel Wildcats. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Stingrays of the 10-6 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2025.

Sumner saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ava Cater, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.

As for Wesley Chapel, the victory (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 15-6. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.8 runs on average over those games.

On Wesley Chapel's side, Alana Claros spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on five hits.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Alyssa Burkardt, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sumner will take on Chamberlain at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Wesley Chapel, they will face off against River Ridge at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
