Basketball Recap: Marquez's Run of Six Straight Wins Now Over

It's hard to turn regular season success into postseason wins, a fact Marquez can now relate to. They wound up with the same score they had in their last game (55-42), but sadly the team found themselves on the wrong side of the score this time. While losing is never fun, they can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 513th, while the Dragons are ranked 239th).

Despite the defeat, Marquez saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Elyjah Staples dropped a double-double with 14 points and 14 boards. Staples has become a key player for Marquez: the team is 12-5 when he posts at least ten rebounds, but 7-8 otherwise. Daniel Reyes was another key player, putting up nine points.

Marquez moved to 19-13 with that loss, which also ended their six-game winning streak. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 62.2 points over those games. As for Bernstein, the win (which was their 16th in a row) raised their record to 26-2.

Marquez does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Bernstein, they will take on Santiago at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Bernstein knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past 28 matchups -- so hopefully Santiago likes a good challenge.
