Boys Lacrosse: Cape Disappoints Tower Hill in Overtime
Cape Henlopen traveled upstate to take on Tower Hill Tuesday in a clash of two of the state’s top-ranked teams. Although Tower Hill held the lead late in the game, the Hillers were unable to hold off the Vikings and lost their last game of the regular season in overtime, 8-7.
The Hillers defense was consistently picked apart by senior Scott Brozey, who put on a show by scoring six of Cape’s eight goals.
Brozey got things started in the first quarter after a Tower Hill penalty gave the Vikings a man advantage. Tower Hill answered right back by winning the ensuing face off resulting in a laser beam goal by Tyler Luft to even the game.
After Cape’s Rory Rogan managed to hit the back of the net to give the Vikings a goal advantage, Tower Hill again scored off the face off as Evan DeDominicis tied things at 2-2. The Hillers soon took the lead behind an extra man goal from Luft, but Brozey struck again to tie the game 3-3 just before the conclusion of the first quarter.
Tower Hill’s senior goaltender David Kluger came alive in the second quarter. Although Kluger allowed Brozey to score his third goal of the first half, he made some spectacular saves to keep the Vikings frustrated. Tower Hill freshman Chas Robino scored a goal and the two teams entered halftime deadlocked at 4-4.
DeDominicis and sophomore Hunter Bolling scored early in the third to give the Hillers a 6-4 advantage. But Brozey could not be stopped as he kept the Vikings in the game with another goal, cutting the lead to 6-5 at the end of the third quarter.
Robino came out firing in the fourth with his second goal, but Brozey answered yet again to make it a 7-6 game. A cutting Chris Woodruff was able to tie the game late in the fourth with a great goal from short distance.
Brozey nearly put the Vikings on top with just over a minute to play, but his shot hit the post. Cape goalie Franc Cook made a huge save on a shot from Robino, followed by an incredible save by Kluger on Brozey; all in the final minute of regulation.
After a two minute struggle in overtime, Cape’s Mark Tappan was able to score the winning goal to give the Vikings a hard fought 8-7 win.
Both goalies had stellar games, with Cook making 19 saves and Kluger making 15.
Tower Hill will enter the state tournament at 10-6, while Cape improves to 14-1 with a game against Sussex Central remaining on their schedule.
Baseball: Dickinson Pitchers Excel as Rams Roll
Dickinson’s Richard O’Donald and Caravel’s Josh Culler faced off in a classic pitcher’s duel Sunday.
O’Donald picked up his sixth win of the season by throwing eight strike outs and allowing two hits in all seven innings of the Ram’s 2-0 victory. Culler gave up two runs in the first inning due to a wild pitch and double steal, but went on to match O’Donald’s eight strike outs while surrendering four hits in six innings of work.
The win improved O’Donald’s record to a flawless 6-0 on the season, giving Dickinson the Ram’s fifth consecutive win.
Just two days later, O’Donald stepped off the mound and went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs to help Dickinson beat Mount Pleasant 9-2. Matt Klaczkewiciz struck out 13 batters while surrendering only three hits in five innings. Klaczkewiciz also made his presence known on offense, going 2-for-3 and knocking in a RBI. The Ram’s out-hit Mount Pleasant 9-3, with catcher Tommy Crist and second baseman Jason Powell each adding a RBI of their own.
The effort was good enough to improve Klaczkewiciz record to a spotless 4-0, as Dickinson now stands at an impressive 16-1.
Girls Soccer: Padua Strikes Back against St. Mark’s
St. Mark’s was unable to finish out the regular season undefeated as the Spartans fell to rival Padua, 5-3, last Thursday.
Morgan Morrow had three goals and an assist, while Courtney Rhodes added two goals and two assists, resulting in a Padua victory.
St. Mark’s came back from a two-goal deficit to tie the game at 3-3 in the second quarter, but Padua was determined to avenge a defeat from the Spartans earlier in the season and would not be denied.
Padua went on to defeat Archmere 6-0 on Tuesday to improve to 10-2-1 on the season. St. Mark’s regular season ends at 15-1.
Padua’s defeat of St. Mark’s leaves Caesar Rodney (14-0) with the only undefeated record in the state.
